This Xbox handheld leak suggests the new device is actually the ROG Ally 2

The Asus and Xbox collaboration, or Project Kennan as it is known, has seen its first images leaked, and I'm not a fan of the design so far.

We might have had our first look at the Asus ROG Ally 2, and in turn the rumored Xbox gaming handheld, courtesy of a new leak. Images of two devices have appeared, along with specs, and they suggest that Asus is preparing new high-end and mid-range handhelds, with both sporting a radical new grip design.

This leak comes via regular tech leaker Huang514613 in an X post, where it is claimed that the images feature not one but two new ROG Ally devices. It's also claimed that the devices have been certified for release in Indonesia and are listed officially as ROG Ally 2, rather than either device being named as an Xbox-associated model.

One of these leaked devices is black and features an Xbox guide button, the other is white. Most notably, both handhelds feature bulbous controller-style grips, a huge change from the sleek grip design of all previous Ally handhelds.

As for the reported specs, the black Asus ROG Ally 2, also being referred to as the Xbox model, will be powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, with 64GB of LPDDR5X-8533 RAM and a 7-inch, 120Hz display.

As for the white model, this is expected to sit behind the black model in of power, only featuring an AMD Aeirth Plus, which is the successor to the Van Gogh chip currently powering the Steam Deck. It features the same display, but it has not been possible to discern the system memory from the blurry leaked image.

If Asus is planning to release a new handheld that just beats out the Steam Deck for power, it will also need to be priced competitively. As we've covered across many Windows handhelds, the operating system is often the biggest weakness of any portable it is on, and SteamOS is much simpler to use and works much better.

It must also be noted that the first third-party SteamOS handheld, the Lenovo Legion Go S, is due to arrive in a week, and will be stiff competition for any budget handhelds due to arrive shortly after.

Like any leak, we have to take this info with a huge pinch of salt until confirmation comes from Asus directly. It's worth noting, however, that new handhelds were teased by Asus on April Fool's Day, but nothing has been mentioned or shown officially since.

With Computex 2025 taking place in just a few weeks, it would make sense for Asus to use this event as a launching pad for the new handhelds, although there's no indication just yet that this is in the works.
