A reimagining, a kind of spin-off, a new lease of life – whatever it is, it's good news for those who love their MMOs with an anime twist.

Blue Protocol release date: The world setting with large, punctuated arches and lush greenery.

Blue Protocol Star Resonance release date estimate

With only the one trailer available so far, we would estimate that the Blue Protocol Star Resonance release date will be around October 2025. A 2025 window was confirmed by the studio, and we would expect a few more months of polish and promotion before we get hold of the MMO.

As you're likely aware, the original Blue Protocol was originally planned for a Western release sometime this year, until the entire project was scrapped due to a disappointing outing in the East.

We see a ton of gameplay in the blue Protocol Star Resonance trailer: from fighting huge monsters to fishing with friends, BPSR is looking to give a rounded adventure to all involved. After all, you can't have an MMO without multiplayer.

Having downtime between the ittedly epic-looking battles is music to our ears. Hanging out, mining for resources, whatever it might be – just being a part of the colorful world is what can make or break a multiplayer experience.

Blue Protocol development timeline and cancellation

The news of Blue Protocol's cancelation came ahead of its projected late-2024 launch into the Western market. While it was disappointing for many who had been eagerly anticipating the new MMO, it perhaps shouldn't have come as a huge surprise considering Blue Protocol's troubled development – something Bandai Namco Online alludes to in its statement.

"We know there has been great anticipation for Blue Protocol since the first announcement of the game," the statement reads. "We wanted to deliver an experience that is like stepping into the world of anime, and we have been challenging ourselves to create a world where each and every player can enjoy adventures as the main character of the anime. We have worked hard to prepare for the release; however, we have come to the conclusion that it will not be possible to provide a service that satisfies all of you."

The biggest warning sign that Blue Protocol was in trouble came when Bandai Namco Online reported a final loss of 8.2 billion yen at the end of fiscal year March 2024, rendering it insolvent. This is a big leap from its final loss of 3.9 billion the previous year, and may have been due to the troubled development of projects like Blue Protocol, which significantly underperformed following the Japanese version's launch.

Thankfully, Blue Protocol Star Resonance means that audiences will still get a chance to play what looks to be an exciting and colorful MMO, turning what was a dour moment in gaming with the cancellation of Blue Protocol into a celebration.
