Doom co-creator finally plays the best boomer shooter: "son, you did a good job"

The godfather of boomer shooters, Doom's John Romero heaps praise on the dark FPS Dusk and tells its creator "I approve of your vocation."

If we were to put it to a democratic vote, the people would undoubtedly elect Doom as their boomer shooter president. But is it the best? Many would argue that title belongs to Dusk, the 2018, retro-style FPS that feels like a throw back to the golden age of Doom. Built primarily by just one man, it's one of the best-reviewed boomer shooters ever, and one of the highest-rated by Steam s. Now though, it's received the ultimate praise. John Romero, the co-founder of id Software and designer of the first Doom game, has finally got around to playing it – and he loves it.

FPS game is dark and dingy in the best possible way, and it's packed with hidden secrets for you to uncover.

If you want a more statistical representation to prove just how great and beloved Dusk is, it's got an 88 average review score on Metacritic, and 89 on Opencritic, and an unbelievably high Steam rating of 97%. In short, it's a classic.

Now, the forefather of boom shooters has given his verdict. As part of a new weekly series on Twitch where he plays revered FPS games, John Romero today played Dusk for the first time.

"This game was super cool – love it," he states at the end of his stream. "The ambience is amazing, the design is super fun, lots of secrets, tons of classic [FPS] design in here. Really nice."

Speaking directly to New Blood Interactive, the game's publisher, and the game's primary developer, David Szymanski, Romero says: "Son, you did a good job. I approve of your vocation. You chose well." High praise indeed from such an iconic figure in the genre.

If you want to play Dusk yourself, you can grab it on Steam right here. Szymanski, alongside his brothers, also recently released the surreal Secret Agent Wizard Boy and the International Crime Syndicate, which is worth a look if you ever wondered whether Harry Potter could cut it as a private investigator.
