Dark Souls and Vampire Survivors combine in new roguelike ARPG Hordes of Hunger

Action roguelike Hordes of Hunger is out now via Steam Early Access, combining elements of Dark Souls, Diablo, Hades, and Vampire Survivors.

Roguelike ARPG Hordes of Hunger has been on my wishlist for quite a while now, and it's just landed on Steam. It brings together the crowd-smashing wave survival of Vampire Survivors, Hades-style upgrades, and hack-and-slash gameplay that strikes a halfway house between the reckless brutality of Diablo and the measured intentionality of Dark Souls. Following a demo earlier in 2025, it's now here in early access, and you can even grab it cheap courtesy of a special launch sale.

As well as carving your way through the monsters attempting to snack on your flesh, you'll need to deal with various other objectives such as claiming food stores and helping out stray survivors. While the action bears some closeness to Vampire Survivors, you have a lot more direct control over things, needing to dodge, dash, or parry to evade incoming attacks that are indicated by flashing indicators. Anyone who's been honing their skills in Expedition 33 will feel right at home here.

Some upgrades offer flat, consistent boosts; others can stack up greater effects if you're able to trigger them multiple times in quick succession. They can also provide bonuses such as temporarility saving you from an otherwise fatal blow.

Between runs, you return to the Sanctum, a hub that plays home to your parents, where you have the ability to tweak and customize your loadout, as well as cooking meals to provide you with buffs on your next adventure out into the world. The narrative also plays out through fully voiced interactions that occur during and between runs in a fashion akin to Hades, as you attempt to uncover the root of the curse affecting protagonist Mirah's homeland. If you're curious enough to jump in at launch, you can take advantage of a Steam sale discount.

Hyperstrange says it anticipates the game's early access to last for approximately six months, with the introduction of a new weapon, more skill trees, quests, maps, enemy types, boss fights, and another NPC. It adds that it plans to increase the price when 1.0 arrives.
