Highly anticipated roguelike Hyper Light Breaker finally gets release date

The Hyper Light Breaker release date has been revealed, and after almost a decade of anticipation, the roguelike will be on Steam very soon.

Greatness takes time, especially in videogames. After almost a decade, a couple of delays, and a publisher changeover, we finally know when open-world roguelike Hyper Light Breaker will be available to play, and it's very soon.

The sequel to Hyper Light Drifter, one of the Hyper Light Breaker builds on that success by expanding on the core premise. This time around, you're a 'Breaker,' a mercenary who's plunged into the Overgrowth on a particular mission. It's a prequel to Drifter, revealing more about the enthralling universe.

The stylistic visuals and fluid gameplay return in spades, as well as the possibility for all sorts of builds and playstyles thanks to the wide selection of weapons and equipment. Now it's a co-op game to boot, so you can partner with up to two other players to tackle the RNG stages and enemies.

Hyper Light Breaker releases on Steam Early Access on January 14, 2025 for $28.99 / £24.99. This was revealed as part of an expansive new trailer that demonstrates just how much of a leap the fantasy game is from its predecessor.

The pixel art and top-down view of the first have been eschewed for a third-person perspective and a bigger, cel-shaded environment. The PC game looks massive as a result, mirroring the feel of modern Zelda games Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Since it's coming out on Early Access, developer Heart Machine has hinted at new characters, bosses and more on the roap. Going this route was always part of the plan, in order to let players guide the devs towards optimal choices for 1.0.

This has become a reliable method of building out new games. Supermassive Games saw massive success with it on Hades, and Path of Exile 2 recently embarked on a similar release journey. We'll see how Hyper Light Breaker fares – for the time-being, getting to play it at all is a relief.
