Another PC brand just paused US shipments, thanks to Trump tariffs

Hyte has paused shipments of products that aren't existing pre-orders, and states that US prices will need to increase due to tariffs.

After Razer decided to pull all its gaming laptops from its US store, it was only a matter of time before other brands made big decisions imports. Hyte is the latest brand to pause US shipments, but it will continue to honor any pre-ordered stock in the short term.

Maker of some of the Hyte wasn't taken lightly. Representatives from Hyte have spoken out on the decisions and explained attempted workarounds, while also confirming that prices are set to rise as a direct result of Donald Trump's tariffs.

News of Hyte's shipping pause comes from product director Rob Teller in a Reddit AMA. This news was foreshadowed during a Gamers Nexus investigation into the cost of tariffs on companies such as Hyte.

During the investigation, Hyte showed the cost of making its Y40 and Thicc Q80 cases. This kind of openness from a business is incredibly rare, but it shows just how dire the situation has become for some businesses during the ongoing tariff war.

According to Hyte's figures from before the tariffs, it was making $5.27 per unit sold of the Y40, the equivalent of a 5% margin, while retailers would make $32.49 per unit sold, a 25% margin.

Based on the current tariff landscape, Hyte is expecting to pay an additional $121 per unit, making the total cost per unit $196.26, and that's before the retailer's cut is considered. Hyte recently increased the price of its Y40 cases to $139.99, but this still leads to Hyte losing $91.26 per case sold, a frankly unsustainable loss.

During the Reddit AMA, a reporter from PCMag asked about the potential suspension of US shipments after the backtracking on 145% tariffs that were due to come into effect at the end of May. Hyte then confirmed that stock still isn't being directly shipped to the US, and is either being diverted or indefinitely paused. This is because the tariffs are still too high, and further tariffs are still due to be introduced on May 31, just for an additional 25% rather than 145%.

It's unclear whether further delays to tariffs would change Hyte's plans, but for now, ordering directly from Hyte in the US is set to become more difficult, while existing stock gets sold out and certain models are pulled from sale, as no further stock is being shipped.

The exception to this situation is Hyte's brand collaboration cases, where the shipments will continue, but Teller warns that the "price will almost certainly need to increase."
