Mafia The Old Country system requirements are out, and they're shocking

Hangar 13 has taken a strange approach to the Mafia The Old Country minimum and recommended specs, and it's left me completely dumbfounded.

What are the Mafia The Old Country system requirements? The return of the Mafia franchise is a welcome one, especially as a narrative-driven experience, but if you have an older gaming PC, you may need to buy some upgrades to get the game running.

While you won't need the Mafia The Old Country, there are some bafflingly high-spec components in the minimum system requirements, with puzzling performance targets listed too.

Take our Mafia The Old Country system requirements PC benchmark test to answer the question… Can I run Mafia The Old Country?

The Mafia The Old Country minimum requirements are completely mindboggling. According to the Steam page, these are the specs you'll need to play the game with the medium graphics preset at 1080p. That's an unusual approach to the minimum specs, as we usually expect this tier to enable you to play the game at 30fps using the low graphical preset at either 1080p or 720p.

This odd decision is then reflected in the chosen hardware. You'll need an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT paired with an Intel Core i7 9700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X. This is very high for the minimum specs for a game that, as the requirement for a 5700 XT suggests, doesn't have enforced ray-tracing. It should be noted that there are also no frame rate targets specified; just the resolution and graphical preset.

The RAM requirement also starts at 16GB, which is starting to become the new norm, but may be a kicker if you own an older gaming laptop that can't be upgraded. The good news is that, on the desktop, upgrading to some of the best gaming RAM is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to improve your gaming rig right now.

As for the Mafia The Old Country recommended specs, these are closer to what should be expected at this tier, but the specs are still high. You'll need an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT paired with an Intel Core i7 12700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X.

The RAM requirement also doubles here to 32GB, which isn't quite as common as the move to 16GB, so you'll need to upgrade if you're still using 16GB in your machine.

Meanwhile, the Mafia The Old Country size is 55GB, with one of the best SSDs for gaming required. Given how far the rest of the system requirements are pushing the limits of what is reasonable, it's no surprise to see an SSD required across all tiers.
