Neverwinter Red Harvest brings a new zone and trial to the free DnD MMORPG

Neverwinter Red Harvest expands the free-to-play Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG as players the resistance against the Red Wizards of Thay.

Baldur's Gate 3 might have set a new bar for Dungeons and Dragons games, and we've got newcomers such as Solasta 2 on the way to give us more ways to delve into the fantasy universe. Yet, 12 years after it first launched, DnD MMORPG Neverwinter remains one of the best, wrapping the iconic setting, classes, characters, and monsters up in an ongoing adventure through the Forgotten Realms. Now, developer Cryptic Studios is unleashing its latest campaign with the launch of Neverwinter: Red Harvest, bringing a battle against the Red Wizards of Thay to the free Steam game.

Despite my eternal love for FF14, I haven't actually clicked with too many of the Neverwinter managed to keep me hooked all the way through to its endgame. It adapts the boundless list of classes and skills found in Dungeons and Dragons into archetypes that feel distinctly flavorful and rewarding to play, keeping the basics simple enough to easily understand and learn but offering enough mechanical depth to ensure fights stay interesting for the long term.

New module Red Harvest draws inspiration from the 2023 movie Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. We'll be delving into three neighbourhoods of Tyraturos, the tower district at the heart of Thay, in an attempt to aid the resistance against the infamous Red Wizards. It's a particularly vertical zone, leading to a towering structure in the north.

Agents have learned that powerful lich Szass Tam and the Zulkir wizard council that rule the land are "machinating on a plan of such significance that it could place the whole of Faerûn under the yoke of Thay." Our plucky band of adventurers has therefore been called to help unravel this plan and put a stop to the Red Wizards' plot.

Red Harvest features three story acts and a trial, The Shackles of Divinity. Cryptic describes this new showdown as "a return to the epic, mechanics-driven boss battles that define Neverwinter's most legendary trials." It offers three difficulty settings; you can get started with the accessible normal mode, which will be available through the random trial queue feature for easier matchmaking. Then step it up to advanced mode and, if you dare, master mode, a "relentless challenge" that emphasizes good mechanics over simply having enough stats.

The latest update will see plenty of returning events: Protector's Jubilee, Celebration of Liira, the Summer Festival, Tymora's Gift, the Challenge of the Gods, and Coins of Waukeen are all making a comeback. While you can jump into Red Harvest as a free Steam game, there's also an optional new battle called 'Dead to Rights' that includes three phases with nine milestones each and offers a new companion, Rath Modar. Other bundles and packs will also be made available for sale over the course of the season.

Neverwinter: Red Harvest is out now. You can play the game for free on Steam. Simply head here if you're ready for a new adventure in the Forgotten Realms.
