There are plenty of reasons to be enthusiastic about GTA 6. It's the first new Grand Theft Auto in over a decade, it (presumably) completes the trilogy that began with the brilliant GTA 4, and it marks a return to Vice City. Nevertheless, I wish Rockstar had given a little more time to Red Dead Redemption 2. Barring Max Payne 3, Manhunt, and the very first GTA, it's the studio's greatest game, but Red Dead Online never got a lot of love, and the world of Arthur Morgan and company was abandoned by its creator prematurely. Clearly, people had the appetite for more RDR 2 – some six years since it was released, the open-world cowboy odyssey is more popular than ever on Steam, and available for the lowest price ever.
What makes open-world games, you play as a virtual surrogate of yourself, and the idea is that you just do what you want. There are some merits to this perhaps, but it feels old-fashioned, and it becomes empty very quickly.
In RDR 2, Arthur Morgan is such an authentic and substantive protagonist that you want to be him. There's a huge and gloriously designed world for you to explore, but everything is anchored to the main character, the ing cast, and the central story. I enjoy hunting for deer, but primarily it's because I like bringing the meat back to camp and giving it to Pearson, because that's what Arthur would do.

Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on PC in December 2019. However, based on data from SteamDB, in the last 24 hours the Western game just hit a new record-high player count. Precisely 86,717 people were playing RDR2 simultaneously on Sunday January 26, smashing the previous record of 77,655 that was set in November 2023.
This surge is the result of a considerable discount. Until Thursday February 6, you can get Red Dead Redemption for the all-time low price of $14.99 / £14.99. If you've never played it before, or if you want to give the PC version a try now that it's having a comeback, just head here.
