To capture creatures, you need to have the whip unlocked. Once you have the whip, hold down the melee button to initiate a lasso motion, then lasso a creature and hold right-click to pull them in.

Small creatures can be captured without fuss, but large ones need to be staggered before they can be pulled in. To stagger a creature, you must daze it by shooting its weak spot. You can find the weak spot of a creature by scanning it, and you'll know you've hit the right point when you hear a satisfying ding sound upon shooting the spot. Once a creature is dazed, you can capture it like you would smaller fauna.

An example of this is the Hognork, one of the first big creatures you're tasked with capturing. Upon scanning the creature, you can see that its weak spot is inside its mouth, specifically on the roof. You're only able to hit the roof of the Hognork's mouth when it roars, so it's a case of giving it the runaround until this happens, blasting away, and lassoing it when it's dazed.
