Although they're still arduous and white-knuckle, there are no other survival games, whether The Long Dark, The Forest, or Project Zomboid, that make you work like Rust does. It's an epic journey. You begin with nothing – the first few hours, you're picking through the wilderness for sticks and rocks. But after enough time and sweat, you can scavenge, research, and craft even the most elaborate modern conveniences. After the transformative Jungle update from earlier this month, Facepunch has just made a less public but still-significant change to the survival shooter's stealth combat.
Melee weapons are useful for staying quiet, but naturally, if you're facing down multiple rival survivors at once, you need a gun – and preferably a silencer. Until now, you could obtain a suppressor in survival game complicates matters, however.
As of today, Wednesday May 14, Facepunch has made a handful of sweeping adjustments to the entire silencer system. First up, conventional silencers are no longer craftable – if you want a ready-made, professional suppressor, you'll have to find one. On the surface, that makes it harder for players to fashion silenced guns. But there's another big change here.

There are now two new improvised silencers, one made using a soda can, another with an oil filter. While these provide temporary suppression, their durability is significantly lower than a standard silencer: the soda can one will expire after 12 shots, while the oil filter variant will stop working after 48 shots.
Facepunch says that finalizing those numbers is a work in progress. It also says that the new silencer types are common enough that they will show up during looting. Regardless, this is a significant change to one of the shooter's most sought-after items.
