Splitgate 2 beta returns after server woes, but there's still work to be done

1047 Games has brought the Splitgate 2 beta servers back online at a limited capacity, as it recovers from a major stumble at launch.

The Splitgate 2 beta presents a multiplayer shooter that takes from the best. It's got gunplay to rival Halo 3, movement to challenge Titanfall 2, and portal tech that'll put Valve to shame. Even with all these promising elements rolled into one, however, the launch has been anything but smooth. Server instability and cosmetic problems marred the release, so much so that the game was temporarily taken offline. Splitgate 2 is back now, though, as the team at 1047 Games slowly opens it up and promises to address some of the biggest issues.

Soon after 1047 Games started the FPS game's servers down temporarily to implement vital bug fixes.

With the servers inactive almost immediately after launch, 1047 CEO Ian Proulx issued an apology to the community, while promising that the team is working hard to get Splitgate 2 working again. "We thought we'd be in great shape by now, and obviously that's not the case. We're really sorry."

Since then, however, things have been looking up. On Saturday May 24, 1047 brought the Splitgate 2 servers back online for a couple of hours and invited players to help test them. Once the test was over, 1047 acknowledged that it was a "bumpy ride" as some couldn't get into games, but said the test was vital to the overall progress of the beta itself.

Now, 1047 has opened up the servers and has them running at a limited capacity. The team says it has introduced a queue while capping the number of players in the game to ensure stability. Shortly after this, 1047 added it has been slowly raising the server cap and that "matches are running smoothly."

My colleague Ken booted up the beta and was able to quickly get into a game with very few issues. There are some bots, which filled spaces if anyone dropped out, but Splitgate 2 itself appears to be on the mend. That said, the team's most recent update indicates that there's still some work to be done.

According to 1047, it is "fully focused on tackling the remaining issues," which come down to three major problems. The first is recovering every player's store purchases, which the studio assures are still saved in its own system, meaning they're not lost. Then it wants to re-enable XP gains and leveling, which have been inconsistent for some time. Finally, 1047 promises it will continue to increase server capacity and stability, making it easier for more of us to jump in and play over time.

Despite the server woes, Splitgate 2 is now live again. The game's beta is currently set to remain available up until the full launch this summer, as 1047 works out the kinks.
