New Helldivers 2 update finally delivers the gigantic battle teased since launch

The new Helldivers 2 update brings Arrowhead’s shooter to a terrifying crescendo, as the Illuminate finally reach the Super Earth homeworld.

This is it, everybody. This is the big one. After more than 12 months of fighting across the Helldivers 2 galaxy, the war to protect democracy has finally breached the bastion that is – or was – Super Earth. Battlefield 6 might be on the way. Rival multiplayer shooters like Delta Force and Tarkov are still going strong. But with the new Helldivers 2 update, Arrowhead has just hit the biggest, reddest button. The Illuminate are on our home turf. There are new teammates, mechanics, and weapon customization tools. If you've gone AWOL from the galactic war, it's time to take up arms and march back to the Helldivers 2 frontline.

The new multiplayer game's other, more arid battlefields, in Heart of Democracy, you're fighting on the streets of giant cities. Skyscrapers explode above you. Rubble rains down. Civilians sprint past, trying to get to safety. They represent one of the major additions in Heart of Democracy: as well as gunning down the Illuminate, you need to safeguard the people of Super Earth. For every non combatant killed by friendly fire, you will be punished.

However, it's not just you and your Helldiver compadres. SEAF troops are on the ground to fight the Illuminate alongside you, and while they will autonomously separate into squads and execute their own offensives, you can also order them to follow you directly, providing extra backup as you wade into the fray. You can also activate the planetary defense cannons, gigantic guns specifically designed to keep Super Earth safe. Combined with the new primary weapon customization tools introduced in the last HD2 update, these should be enough – hopefully – to push the Illuminate back.

Helldivers 2 Heart of Democracy is already live as of today, Tuesday May 20. If you want to give the game a shot, you can get it right here.
