How to become a vampire in Oblivion

To become a vampire, you must contract the Porphyric Hemophilia disease and sleep for three consecutive nights until 72 in-game hours have elapsed.

The quickest way to contract Porphyric Hemophilia is to fight a vampire. Each time you take damage from their melee attacks, you have a chance to catch the disease. A notification pops up in the top-left corner of the screen once you do, but you can also check your active effects to see if you have it.

The earliest opportunity to encounter vampires is in the Memorial Cave on the shore opposite the Imperial Sewer's south-east exit, or in Fort Hastrel north of Kvatch.

You can also catch Porphyric Hemophilia after you the Oblivion Remastered Dark Brotherhood. Speak to Vicente Valtieri in his Private Quarters of the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, and complete all his contracts. He offers to turn you into a vampire in Darkness Eternal, his final quest. If you initially refuse, you can later accept by speaking to him and selecting the "Dark Gift" dialogue option.

Finally, you can contract Porphyric Hemophilia during the Unearthing Mehrunes Razor quest. You can take the Beating Heart from Msirae Faythung and eat it. This also infects you with Cannibal's Prion, so be careful to wait the full 72 hours before you cure it. However, this is an overly complicated way to become a vampire, and we don't recommend it.

Once you have caught Porphyric Hemophilia, you must rest in a bed once 72 hours have elapsed for the disease to advance to Vampirism. You can also rest up to three times to experience strange dreams and gradually unlock vampire skills.

How to cure Vampirism in Oblivion Remastered

To cure Vampirism in Oblivion Remastered, speak to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University in Skingrad to begin the Vampire Cure questline.

Porphyric Hemophilia can be cured just like any other disease. Either consume an item or cast an Oblivion Remastered spell with Cure Disease to remove Porphyric Hemophilia as an active status effect before it develops into Vampirism. that Vampirism only develops once you rest three times, so you can prolong this premature state by avoiding sleep.

Once Porphyric Hemophilia develops into full Vampirism, your only hope is Raminus Polus at the Arcane University. Speak to him and select the 'Cure Vampirism' dialogue option for a referral to Count Janus Hassildor, a fellow vampire that's also searching for a cure. Speak to Janus and follow his rumor to Melisande at Drakelowe.

Melisande can cure vampirism, but she needs a few ingredients first. This fetch quest requires you to gather five empty Grand Soul Gems, Bloodgrass, Garlic, Nightshade, the Blood of an Argonian, and the Ashes of Hindaril. Here's how to get each item:

Item Location
Grand Soul Gems (x5) Sometimes found in dungeon loot (when above level 11) or stolen from display cases.
Bloodgrass (x2) Tall red grass is commonly stocked at Alchemy stores or found growing by Oblivion gates.
Garlic (x6) A common sight in houses or sold at shops and inns
Nightshade (x5) Found around the West Weald or bought at the Alchemy shop in the Imperial City.
Argonian Blood Stab an Argonian with the Enchanted Dagger.
Ashes of Hindaril Kill Hindaril in Redwater Slough.

Return to Melisande and turn in the ingredients, then return once 24 hours has elapsed to receive the Cure for Vampirism potion. Use it from your Potions tab to cure vampirism. She also gives you the Vampirism Cure Potion, which you can take to Count Hassildor to complete his questline.

Once you consume the Cure for Vampirism potion, you also become immune to Vampirism. While you can contract the Porphyric Hemophilia disease, it acts like a standard debilitating debuff, and can be removed through normal means. Sleeping while afflicted won't turn you back into a vampire.

You can also use the Oblivion Remastered console commands to cure Vampirism using the "000977E4" item ID. This is by far the fastest way to cure Vampirism, but it is a bit of a cheat.

Should you become a vampire in Oblivion?

You should become a vampire in Oblivion Remastered if you play a stealth character in need of a stat boost and you don't mind avoiding sunlight or taking breaks to feed.

Vampirism in Oblivion is a high-risk, high-reward state with various benefits and drawbacks depending on the time between feeding. Damage resistance increases alongside your hunger, and you receive bonuses to the following attributes and skills:

  • Strength
  • Willpower
  • Acrobatics
  • Athletics
  • Destruction
  • Hand to Hand
  • Illusion
  • Mysticism
  • Speed
  • Sneak

The longer you go without feeding as a vampire, the more powerful these bonuses become. You also unlock unique vampire skills, as detailed below.

However, the drawbacks to Vampirism can have a huge effect on the way you navigate the world. Continuous sun damage forces you to spend most of your time in Cyrodiil under the cover of darkness. Your physical appearance also changes, prompting various NPCs to shun or even attack you.

Oblivion Remastered vampire pros

Time between feeding Skills/Attributes Normal weapon resistance Ability Ability effect
1 day (25%) +5 5% Hunter's Sight Applies Night Eye (30 seconds) and Detect Life (100ft for 30 seconds)
2 days (50%) +10 10% Vampire's Seduction Applies Charm for 50 points for 20 seconds once per day.
3 days (75%) +15 15% Reign of Terror Applies Silence for 60 seconds and Demoralize (on level <7 target) for 60 seconds once per day.
4+ days (100%) +20 20% Embrace of Shadows Night Eye for 90 seconds and Invisibility for 180 seconds.

Oblivion Remastered vampire cons

Time between feeding Fire weakness Damage from the sun
1 day (25%) 20% 0 HP per second
2 days (50%) 30% 1 HP per second
3 days (75%) 40% 4 HP per second
4+ days (100%) 50% 8 HP per second

Since you only take damage from the sun at the second stage of hunger onwards, it is possible to maintain some of the benefits of Vampirism in Oblivion while still venturing out in the sun without taking damage.

Feeding once will return you to this first stage of hunger no matter which stage you're currently on. However, this also reduces the positive effects of Vampirism, so choose your feeding times carefully.

How to feed as a vampire in Oblivion

To feed, interact with a sleeping NPC and select the "Feed" prompt. Camps and inns are by far the best places to feed in Oblivion Remastered. Your host is unlikely to notice you, witnesses are scarce, you won't have to worry about sunlight.

You can feed on the same NPC as many times as you like. The beggars that wander in cities and towns are a good choice, but take care to avoid being spotted. We don't recommend feeding on guards, since they're liable to wake up and arrest you.
